What is the Pledge

So you think you’re a people business….?

In a time of uncertainty, commitment to training and CSR is tested and self preservation often wins. With high levels of graduate unemployment, our fear is that the construction industry will be left with a skills shortage when the upturn happens.

The government has taken steps to address the problem across every sector, introducing the Graduate Talent Pool scheme which facilitates the process of placing graduates in internships or placements. But built environment-related vacancies posted on the site are few and far between.

The Pledge is a structured initiative, designed specifically to help the UK construction sector to take the next step. It seeks both to increase the number of built environment internships, placements and apprenticeships on offer and to ensure that they are advertised via the Graduate Talent Pool.

So what’s involved?

We are simply asking organisations to sign up to The Pledge and:

• Be a role model to others in the industry;
• Pay an appropriate wage, dependant on the position being offered; and
• For placements or internships, provide references and class the position as employment,
not training.

All we ask in terms of numbers is do as much as you can – even one placement or internship can make a difference in the industry.

Take the first step in safeguarding future talent
